The International Criminal Court

Safeguard(s) and Revision of the Rome Statute

3rd International Law Symposium

This year is a pivotal year for international justice. Setting aside major international criminal proceedings that have been carried out in several parts of the globe, the International Criminal Court (ICC) celebrates its seventh anniversary and the safeguard clause applicable to certain countries that excludes war crimes from the competence of the Court is about to expire. In the present year, all scholar and academic work and also diplomatic efforts, should be focused on adopting reforms that will be presented in the Rome Statute revision conference that will take place in the first half of 2010.

Considering all of the above, the “Centro de Estudios de Derecho Internacional Francisco Suárez S.J.” looking forward to publishing a compilation of essays analyzing aspects related to the application of the ICC Statute over the last seven years, specifically, the incidence of safeguards adopted by States, transitional justice issues and international cooperation, further to those topics that are to be debated within the Conference itself, among others –perhaps the most controversial of all– the definition of the crime of aggression, hereby invites all interested parties to submit their scholar and academic contributions.

Contemporaneous with all of the foregoing, the divulgation and dissemination of selected articles will take place in the city of Bogotá with the support of the Department of Public Law and the Department of Criminal Law of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Law School within the “Francisco Suárez, S.J.” International Law and Human Rights Ibero-American Moot Court competition organized by CEDI. It should be noted however, that unfortunately there will be no financial aid available to cover participants’ travel and related expenditures who are interested in attending the 3rd International Law Symposium that is to take place next October 28, 2009.

Essays to be submitted shall have no less than 15 pages or more than 30 and they must follow the Harvard System of Referencing, clearly indicating the name and institutional association of the author.

Abstract submission deadline (max. 200 words in length): May 31, 2009

Essay submission deadline: July 20, 2009
