The Institution The Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, with its main campus in Bogotá and another in Cali, is a private Institution of Higher Education, founded and governed by the Society of Jesus. It is a legal corporate entity under Ecclesiastic Law, authorized by the Colombian government to operate and issue university degrees. The University was founded in 1621 and lasted until 1767 when the Jesuits were exiled from the domains of Charles III, King of Spain. On October 1, 1930, 163 years after it had been closed, the Foundation Act to reactivate the University was signed. On February 16, 1931 the first new academic year began. As pioneer in Higher Education in Colombia, the priority of Universidad Javeriana's Mission for the immediate future is to promote research and multidimensional education through the curricula, to strengthen its status as an interdisciplinary institution, and to emphasize its presence throughout the country and the world. Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá has 18 Schools, 14 Institutes, and the Open University Center. It serves a community of more than 19,760 undergraduate students and 2,684 graduate students. Of them, there are 3,702 undergraduate and 196 graduate students in distance learning programs. |
