David Londoño Sanz, a doctoral student and researcher at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, has been selected to participate in the Summer Visiting Doctoral Research Fellowship at Boston College in the United States. This highly competitive program supports doctoral candidates in advancing their research under the guidance of internationally renowned faculty.

David’s application process began with a crucial firts step: submitting his CV and responding to three core questions—describing his doctoral research project, explaining how a stay at Boston College would contribute to it, and identifying faculty members at the host university whose expertise aligns with his work.

After translating his CV into English and spending an afternoon to thoughtfully answer the questions, David was invited to a virtual interview in March with the Director of Global Engagement at Boston College. Despite not having spoken English in a while, the interview went smoothly, and shortly after, he received the official confirmation of his selection.

Following his acceptance, David began the process to obtaining a J-1 visa, a requirement for academic stays in the U.S. Boston College fully supports and covers the visa process, including travel expenses, accommodation, and a monthly stipend for living costs.
Reflecting on the opportunity, David shares: “Being selected brought me great joy. I’ve never been to Boston, and I see this as a chance to expand my academic, cultural, and linguistic horizons.”

He also encourages fellow students and researchers to pursue international opportunities offered by the university. “In medieval times, students traveled dangerous roads to reach universities in Bologna, Paris, or Córdoba. Today, the Jesuit university network is stronger than ever, and it’s up to us to make the most of these global pathways.”

El proceso de postulación comenzó con un primer paso claro y directo: enviar su hoja de vida y responder tres preguntas esenciales—describir su proyecto de tesis doctoral, explicar cómo su estancia en Boston College lo fortalecería, e identificar profesores de la universidad anfitriona que podrían aportar significativamente a su investigación.

Tras traducir su hoja de vida al inglés y dedicar una tarde a responder cuidadosamente las preguntas, David fue convocado a una entrevista virtual en marzo con el director de Global Engagement de Boston College. Aunque hacía tiempo no practicaba el inglés, la conversación fluyó con naturalidad y, poco después, recibió la noticia oficial de su selección.

Una vez aceptado, comenzó el trámite de la visa J-1, requisito indispensable para estancias académicas en Estados Unidos. Boston College asume todos los costos del proceso, incluyendo los pasajes, el alojamiento en la universidad y un estipendio mensual para gastos personales.
Para David, esta experiencia representa una gran oportunidad: “Nunca he estado en Boston y siento que es una ocasión para ampliar mis horizontes académicos, culturales y lingüísticos”.

Además, invita a estudiantes e investigadores javerianos a aprovechar las oportunidades de movilidad internacional que ofrece la Universidad. “En la Edad Media, los estudiantes recorrían caminos peligrosos para llegar a universidades como Bolonia, París o Córdoba. Hoy, la red de universidades jesuitas se ha fortalecido, y está en nuestras manos aprovechar estos caminos globales”.
