The closing plenary of the 2025 Assembly of the International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU), held at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, from June 30 to July 3, focused on “Environmental Justice: Responding to the Cry of the Earth and the Cry of the Poor.” It brought together leaders from around the world to assess Jesuit universities’ response to Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ and to strengthen the network’s role as a driver of ecological and social transformation.
The 2025 International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU) Assembly, held at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, brought together leaders from across the world to discern the next chapter of Jesuit higher education. The closing Assembly focused on two overarching questions: What are priority issues for Jesuit Higher Education at the global level? And how can regional networks actively implement the IAJU Strategic Agenda to address these concerns?
In alignment with the Society of Jesus’ Universal Apostolic Preference to walk with the excluded, the 2025 International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU) Assembly plenary session “Migration, Refugees and Those on the Frontier” brought together global leaders in Jesuit higher education to share practices and articulate a shared path forward. The session emphasized how universities can move beyond symbolic solidarity to sustained action on behalf of migrants, refugees, and forcibly displaced persons.
During the plenary session “Artificial Intelligence: Benefits and Challenges” of the 2025 Assembly of the International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU), held on July 2 at Javeriana University, leaders from Jesuit universities around the world came together to reflect on the profound changes that AI is bringing to education.
In an increasingly secular world, Jesuit and Catholic universities are uniquely positioned to respond to the challenge of maintaining mission integrity while engaging diverse, pluralistic societies. Plenary Session 3, “The Challenges of Secularism,” moderated by Fr. Michael Garanzini, S.J. (President, Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities–North America), tackled this complexity, offering insight and actionable strategies for institutional leaders navigating the tensions between secularism and faith-based education.
At the plenary session “Students’ Well-Being: Helping the Youth for a Hope-Filled Future: An Ignatian Guide to Spiritual and Mental Health,” leaders and educators from Jesuit universities gathered to address the urgent mental health challenges facing today’s students. With youth mental health concerns escalating globally, panelists emphasized institutional responsibility—and opportunity—to embed care, resilience, and meaning into the student experience using Ignatian values as a compass.
In response to the powerful address delivered by Fr. Arturo Sosa, S.J., Superior General of the Society of Jesus, titled “The Jesuit University: Witness to Hope, Creative and Dialogical Presence,” the opening plenary of the 2025 International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU) Assembly gathered institutional leaders to reflect and discern concrete paths forward. Held at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, the session centered on how Jesuit higher education can respond to today’s complex social, political, and spiritual challenges with renewed commitment, collaboration, and creativity.
At a time when democratic values are under severe threat globally, the International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU) convened a powerful pre-conference session titled “Democracy in Crisis.”
