Social Communication Intern at the Office of International Affairs 

On March 20, the Office of International Affairs, in partnership with Politecnico di Torino, held a key meeting as part of the Historical, Tourist, and Cultural Heritage Conservation Project. This initiative, led by Giovanni Calvano, Director of International Affairs, is supported by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. Its main goal is to strengthen the capacities of local tourism stakeholders to promote innovative, sustainable, and responsible tourism in the region. 

The meeting brought together distinguished representatives from academia and engineering, including Alfonso Gómez Gómez, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Design, and Diego Alejandro Patiño Guevara, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. Also present was Yezid Alvarado, Director of the Engineering Laboratories, who has played a crucial role in the project’s technical leadership. From Politecnico di Torino, Annalisa Damen and Paolo Mellano from the Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) participated, both of whom have been leading efforts in architectural restoration and heritage conservation. 

During the meeting, key strategies were defined for the implementation of the project, with a primary focus on the restoration of the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, an iconic monument in Cartagena de Indias. In addition to interventions in these historic spaces, the project seeks to generate a positive impact on the local community by training tourism stakeholders and implementing sustainable practices for heritage conservation. 

 

Proyecto de Conservación del Patrimonio en Cartagena: Una Alianza para la Restauración Histórica. 

El día 20 de marzo, la Dirección de Asuntos Internacionales, en alianza con el Politecnico Di Torino, llevó a cabo una reunión clave en el marco del Proyecto de Conservación del Patrimonio Histórico, Turístico y Cultural. Esta iniciativa gestionada por Giovanni Calvano, Director de Asuntos Internacionales, cuenta con el respaldo de la Agencia de Cooperación y Desarrollo de Italia y la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana; y tiene como objetivo fortalecer las capacidades de los actores turísticos locales para la promoción de un turismo innovador, sostenible y responsable en la región. 

La reunión contó con la participación de destacados representantes de la academia y la ingeniería, entre ellos, Alfonso Gómez Gómez, decano de la Facultad de Arquitectura y Diseño, y Diego Alejandro Patiño Guevara, decano de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. También estuvo presente Yezid Alvarado, director de los laboratorios de ingeniería, quien ha desempeñado un papel fundamental en la dirección técnica del proyecto. Por parte del Politécnico Di Torino, participaron Annalisa Damen y Paolo Mellano, del Departamento de Arquitectura y Diseño (DAD), quienes han liderado esfuerzos en la restauración arquitectónica y la conservación del patrimonio. 

Durante el encuentro, se definieron estrategias clave para la ejecución del proyecto, priorizando la restauración de la Catedral Basílica Metropolitana Santa Catalina de Alejandría, un monumento emblemático de la ciudad de Cartagena de Indias. Además de la intervención en estos espacios históricos, se busca generar un impacto positivo en la comunidad local mediante la capacitación de actores turísticos y la implementación de prácticas sostenibles en la conservación del patrimonio.
